Phonological awareness is critical for learning to read any alphabetic writing system.

And research shows that difficulty with phoneme awareness and other phonological skills is a predictor of poor reading and spelling development.

Children that struggle with reading comprehension usually have underlying deficits or weakness with phonological awareness. Parents can assist with improving their child’s phonemic awareness skills by involving verbal and written language activities (i.e rhyming activities, increased exposure to written activities etc) in different ways.
